Would Individual Therapy Help Me?

We all have experiences of feeling vulnerable, uncertain, or have difficulty managing. There are also times when life seems to flow with complete ease.

Therapy provides a conversation space for the difficult, the sensitive, and the unexpected things in life. Individual therapy helps  when you need to talk about how to manage concerns or to feel more productive. This can help you manage yourself more efficiently and experience more of a sense of wellbeing. Therapy can help us to:

  • Work with painful or anxious feelings with greater ease
  • Discover insightful ways of understanding and changing unhelpful patterns and behaviours
  • Find gentler ways to motivate yourself rather than self criticism
  • Reconnect with what is important to develop a valued sense of direction
  • Learn to improve relationships with yourself and others, to feel more peace
  • Increase professional productivity and performance

Evidence based Clinical Treatment is provided for:

  • Low mood, sadness, hopelessness and struggles with motivation
  • Stress, anxiousness and anxiety-driven thoughts and behaviours (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
  • Abuse, Trauma, P.T.S.D, Complex Trauma
  • Guilt, shame, anger and other overwhelming emotions
  • Grief and Loss

Handling Change Positively

Finding skilful ways of navigating change effectively can help you feel more confident and reduce stress. You develop an understanding of how change can be perceived differently and use it to learn and grow personally. Periods of transition that we all encounter in life can be challenging. Struggling and resisting change is natural because we take comfort in the familiar and the unknown causes a certain amount of fear and stress.

Life transitions are usually life-changing events that cause us to re-examine our present sense of being. They can be predictable - such as children leaving the home or marriage, but they can often be unpredictable - such as a move, an accident or a loss. Many people experience life transitions at predictable times. These can include mid-life or deciding to change careers or job focus.

Other times include:

  • Parenting
  • Separation or Divorce
  • Co-Parenting following a separation
  • Career change or loss of career

Counselling can help you to:

  • Connect with helpful professional support and guidance
  • Strengthen your insight and develop skills to prepare for and manage difficult situations
  • Understand how to minimise the effects of negative, stressful situations.
  • Feel more resilient and able to cope
  • Bounce back and regroup from challenging times
  • Develop a growth mindset to build your personal capabilities
  • Face challenges while feeling more confident and optimistic.

What to expect from individual therapy and how it works

Initial Session

In your first session we aim for a good understanding of your current situation. This includes your history, your life experiences, what has brought you to therapy and the shifts and changes you are seeking to make.

Following this assessment, we will discuss treatment options. This discussion will establish outcomes and goals for therapy. It also forms the basis of an individual care plan to help you to gain relief from your symptoms and move forward with treatment.

Ongoing Sessions

Ongoing one-on-one sessions allow you to increase the range of discussions, clinical interventions, and psychological education. The type of intervention and counselling will depend on your condition and needs. Initially at the start of therapy weekly sessions are suggested and as therapy progresses sessions can be spaced out. Some people require six sessions, others will continue to work with Lisa on an on-going basis.

Referrals

You don't need a GP referral to see Lisa, but if you get one it may entitle you to a Medicare Rebate for 10 sessions per calendar year. Your GP can assess whether you are eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan. If you already see a Psychologist or Psychiatrist, they can refer you as well.

Results

Managing painful situations in life better helps us to identify other options to consider during a crisis. Problems coping are not a failure, but a signal to look within. It’s the way to progress forward.
